Upanayana Sanskar

Upanayana Sanskar (Upanayana = to bring near; Sanskar = purification and formation) is an important rite in the Vedic tradition, also known as the Yajnopavit Sanskar or the Munibrahman Sanskar. This rite confers on the child the right to study the Vedas and is believed to grant him Dwijatva (second birth).

Meaning and importance of Upanayana Sanskar

Up + Nayan = To bring closer to the Guru.

A rite of passage that allows a disciple to study the Vedas and enter the Brahmacharya Ashram.

‘Dwija’ means second-born — first born from parents, second born from Guru (of knowledge).

After completing the Upanayana, the disciple observes celibacy, engages in self-study, and serves the Guru.
