Vedic marriage rituals – detailed information

The marriage ceremony is one of the sixteen rites (Shodash Sanskar) of Hinduism. According to Vedic tradition, marriage is not just a contract to start a family between two people, but a religious, social and spiritual bond. In this, the bride, groom and their families take vows before the gods through sacrifices, mantras and rituals and begin a new life.

Purpose of the marriage ceremony

  • To bind two people — their bodies, minds, and souls — in a sacred bond.
  • The beginning of fulfilling three of the four Purusharthas (Dharma, Artha, Kama) and ultimately progressing toward Moksha.
  • Expansion of lineage and culture through the birth of the next generation (offspring).

Vedic Ritual

Importance of mantra and sacrifice

In Vedic marriage, all the rituals are performed with the mantras of Yajurveda and Rigveda. Since these rituals are performed under the witness of a sacrifice, marriage becomes not just a social contract but a religious bond. The main thing is for the newlyweds to resolve to be each other's companions for the rest of their lives, with fire as the witness.

Today, many wedding ceremonies are shorter, but traditional Vedic wedding rituals are still widely observed among Brahmins, Vaishyas, Kshatriyas, and other Hindu communities, especially in large religious families and villages.
